THE PRAYFIT DEVOTION
Bring Me To Life
"But about the day or the hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father knows." --Matthew 24:36
Goofing off with Loretta in the truck outside of Trader Joe's this weekend, we were asking Siri (the male voice) some questions on our phones. Have you ever done that? Well, from updates on football scores, weather and traffic, he had all the answers. And then in jest, I asked him something nobody knows the answer to. I inquired, "When's the end of the world?" His answer hushed the truck.
Loretta and I sat silent, staring at each other with wide-mouthed grins. Typically, Siri will check the internet or offer some type of helpful pathway for most questions. But instead, he made a wish.
Now I admit, the sentimental side of me could have easily formed a lump in my throat, but I assure you, I pulled it together. It's just a computer after all! But his sense of urgency to enjoy life was something to take to heart. Amen? Even though he didn't know the answer, he gave us one.
Bring me to life for one glorious day. Wow. Is that your heart's desire? What do you burn inside to do? Share Christ, celebrate health, spend time with family, make a difference, run on the beach? I'm guessing all of the above and more. Well, me too. And yeah, maybe with a little ice cream.
--Jimmy Peña
For Discussion: The nightly newscast is full of stories of pain and loss, even recently with car accidents and train derailments. Our hearts ache for those who are suffering. Like Siri, you and I don't have the answers about the end of the world or the end of the day for that matter. But sometimes they share the same date. That's why we have to choose now. To accept Christ, to share Christ, to serve Him. Along with that comes all the rest, including the need for health. What can we pray about with you today? List it below or simply say, "Unspoken" and we promise to lift you up. We don't have the answers, but we know Who does. Let's ask Him for one more glorious day.
RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Deuteronomy 8:8 Cookies
A cookie recipe? Here? You betcha. A delicious, too-good-to-be-true cookie recipe that you can whip up in no time flat. But this delightful, fresh-from-the-oven treat doesn't fall into the same category as other waist-widening delectable desserts. Read on to find out why.
Do You See Yourself?
"The Lord looks at the heart..." --1 Samuel 16:7
Read: 1 Samuel 16
Last week when PrayFit VP Eric Velazquez described seeing his resemblance in his daughter's faces, this weeping writer fought back tears. He said, "Jimmy, it's one thing to know they're your own flesh and blood, but when you start to see yourself, it's simply amazing. I'm at a loss for words." That says a lot coming from Eric, arguably one of the best writers in the country.
But you know, I want to be like Mya and Ella. Not that I want to look like Eric (handsome as he is), but the only thing I want more than being a dad one day is to be a child that resembles his Father.
Friends, as we end this work week, we hope that's the message you've heard here at PrayFit. Some enjoy the fitness tips, others the recipes. But don't miss this: Nothing matters unless we have Jesus in our hearts. If we're at a loss for words, our approach to wellness merely serves as a back-up to A) praise Him with our lives and B) help spread the gospel. Despite our highest highs and lowest lows, when He looks at us, it's His own reflection He longs to see.
--Jimmy Peña
"Lord, we love you. Our utmost desire is for you to live in our hearts. We seek your resemblance. See yourself, we pray. Amen."

“But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven.” – Matthew 6:20
Have you ever chased the wind? I know I have. Kind of leaves you empty-handed doesn't it? Funny, we pursue a lot of things that won’t satisfy or sustain, yet we hunt them down as if our life depended on them. Appropriately, coming back from vacation, we promised that we'd focus on our focus. Therefore, yesterday we reached out to those in dire need of a reminder of why the hills we have to climb are worth the effort, regardless of whether or not it comes naturally.
Today our sights shift to those who have those habits of training and eating down pat. Perhaps that's you? Maybe being health conscious comes as naturally as breathing in and out. After all, you wouldn't dare think about eating that, and as far as me suggesting you not go to the gym? Bite my tongue, right? But perhaps if you're like me, at times what's missing in your mirror is the one you're meant to mirror. Perhaps you've been so caught up in the process of being healthy, that you forgot about the purpose of it.
If so, let's remind each other that chasing healthy dreams is fine, but only if we're running after God along the way. That keeps everything we need in front of us. You know, I've referenced it before, but last night the song “Meaningless” by Anthony Evans happened to be playing as I sat at my computer. I’ve attached a YouTube version of it, and I hope you’ll take a listen. Such a great visual message for our week of perspective. It blessed me, and I hope it helps you see your reflection in a brand new way.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” –1 Samuel 16:7
Earlier this year, I had the honor of spending some time with the leaders of the Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso – an amazing group of people that I promise you’ll hear more about in the months ahead. And while touring one of the facilities, a teenager’s t-shirt caught my attention. It read, “Hay Que Tener Ganas.” As I read it out loud, I was given a shrug and a head tilt, “Ya gotta have heart.” (And mine stopped). To say the moment motivated me would be like saying Picasso painted or Mozart made music; an understatement to say the least. And as it turns out, it’s their motto.
So because of those kids, that’s our focus today. How we take care of the bodies God gave us is a heart issue, is it not? At PrayFit, we believe how the body responds in weight loss is merely a byproduct of obedience. It’s the daily diligence to eat right and exercise that takes true desire and guts. The kind of guts Omar, David and Clutch showed me this year. “They’re the true dreamers” — something I think their director, Mrs. Maldonado, would be the first to point out.

PRAYFIT IN EL PASO DEC. 2: If you’re in the El Paso area on December 2, please visit us at the El Paso Museum of Art for their 3rd Annual Fund Raising Gala. PrayFit will be on hand to support their efforts and also to begin the PrayFit book tour. If you’re unable to attend, please visit the El Paso Boys and Girls Clubs to donate to a great cause.
PRAYFIT WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: Push-Ups & Sit-Ups Herschel Walker, the famed NFL running back, would be proud of today's workout. He was notorious for training using just his bodyweight to craft his strong, lean physique. This week's workout is an upper body-and-abs thrasher. Just 10 minutes of work is all you'll need for this one. Perform one minute of each exercise then move to the next one, resting only as long as it takes to get into position. Try to get as many reps of each move as you can each minute, logging your total reps and striving to beat that number in each workout this week. Newbies should try two workouts, 3-4 days apart. Intermediates can try an every-other-day approach for three or four workouts total and advanced trainers can perform this mini routine five days straight.

Secretariat was fast.
As one of the top three thoroughbreds of all time, Secretariat was in a class by himself. In fact, no other horse has ever run 1 1/2 miles faster than Secretariat. Of the greatest sports performances of all time, Secretariat’s run at the Belmont Stakes is ranked second only to Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game by ESPN. And on his way to a still-standing Kentucky Derby record, Secretariat ran each quarter mile faster the one before it; unheard of before or since.
Like I said, Secretariat was quick.
And while Secretariat was the only horse to dawn the covers of Newsweek, Time and Sports Illustrated, his exuberance when he ran was justified only by what doctors found when he finally couldn’t; he was all heart. After suffering an incurable hoof condition, the autopsy of Secretariat revealed his heart weighed an astounding 22 pounds, the largest ever recorded for a racehorse.
I wanted to share the story of Secretariat simply to continue our week of inward glances. Are we running the race harder than yesterday? Are we committing ourselves to spiritual and physical health with heart? If so or if not, either way, it's a new day and…we’re off!!

PRAYFIT WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: BACK This workout is made up of the tried-and-true basics of back training, from the strength-and-power staples like the bent-over row and deadlift to the challenging simplicity of the traditional pull-up as an intense finisher. If you prefer, you can switch the order of the row and deadlift from workout to workout, which means that both exercises get the benefit of going first when you’re freshest and have the most energy to lift heavy poundage. Same idea goes for the wide-grip pulldown and seated cable row. Post your experiences to the comments section below, or in the forums.
