Of Walls and Temples

"When all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations surrounding us saw it, they lost their confidence; for they recognized that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God." --Nehemiah 6:16

Read: Nehemiah 6 When Nehemiah heard the news of Jerusalem his heart broke. The walls had been toppled and the temple destroyed. Through prayer, trials, and trust, the faithful people of Israel rebuilt the wall in just 52 days, which was miraculous because the wall had been laying in ruin for 140 years. It's a wonderful, powerful story of God's accomplishment. I urge you to read Nehemiah with us.

I was reminded of that story earlier this year when Loretta and I traveled to the wonderful city of Asheboro, North Carolina. We had the pleasure of speaking to hospital staff, encouraging their continuous effort to extend the dreams of the sick. We rallied with community business leaders, reminding them that our health enables us to be better servant-leaders. And we joined the mission of a small group of believers who, like Nehemiah, have a broken heart for the temple and are building walls to protect it.

You know, the bible says that when Jerusalem's walls were rebuilt, the enemies "lost their confidence" because they knew God had accomplished it for them. Wow. Constructing walls, rebuilding temples. Keep going, Asheboro. How blessed we are to witness your work; humbled to have been given a brick.

Question: What walls does your church, community or business need to build to protect and honor health? Have you broken ground?

MAKE YOUR CHURCH NEXT: Life is not about the body. Our health is a means of praise. This fundamental message, which has become the heart of PrayFit in the last several years, has always been at the heart of Jimmy's philosophy on exercise and nutrition. But to put it in a paragraph here doesn't do it justice -- to hear it from the man himself is a convicting experience for anyone who has the opportunity. Let us help you bring this message to your church or community event. Contact us today at [email protected].

Sizzle Reel of Life

"You are judging by appearances. If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ, they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do." --2 Corinthians 10:7

Read: 2 Corinthians 10

Yesterday I was blessed to spend the day in some incredible circles and meetings. In fact, this entry was written during one of them. Sitting with the amazing creative group at Bagg Street Productions, we brainstormed and discussed how we were going to package PrayFit to send to churches and groups across the country. We took material of past speaking engagements, headlines and some of our quotes, all in an effort to distill the PrayFit message down to a three-minute reel. Only three minutes? Better choose only my best.

I sat excited. They'll omit my mistakes, delete my stutters and polish my presentation. After all, they don't call it a sizzle reel for nothin'. But it was at that moment that I gave a noticeable pause to mentally write this entry (the team there no doubt noticed).

Isn't that what we do in life? We want the world to see only the good stuff. Put on the good face and step with the right foot. Nothing wrong with me (smile)! Accept me, follow me, love me. But God really knows us, doesn't He? And He accepts us, follows us and loves us despite ourselves. He sees the best of us, but He wants the rest of us. And when it comes to our minds, our jobs and our health, let's do just that. In the end, when our lives are distilled down, it's only Jesus we want others to see.

THORN BUSHES AND DOG LEASHES

August 30, 2010Read: 1 Chronicles 16

“Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always.” –1 Chronicles 16:11

Amidst my usual helping of chaotic and unpredictable mornings, there is one constant in the day’s beginning: Josey. Josey is our chocolate labrador...our very strong and excited chocolate lab. The apple of my eye. Blink blink.

Each morning Josey acts as if she hasn’t seen me in weeks. “Dad! It’s me, dad! I love you! I missed you!” (If only I started my days like that). And after our reunion, she heads to the door. Wait, let me rephrase, she attacks the door. “Okay Josey, okay!” I put her chain on, and we begin our morning adventure; she knows exactly where she wants to explore. First, she looks for the rabbits, then the squirrels, then the birds. So much to do! But it’s interesting that once we go outside, it’s as if I’m not even there. The one who opens all her doors, the one she couldn’t get enough of, was now an invisible bystander. Can anyone relate to her behavior?

Well, getting caught in some bushes today was not part of her plan. Tangled inside a bush on a steep hill, her joy turned to panic. And for the first time since emerging outside, she looked up at her master (the one who never lets go of the leash). Now, from my vantage point, all she had to do was listen to me, back up a few steps, and she’d be as free as the very bird that got her there in the first place.

Packaged in the unexpected, sometimes God speaks to us with thorn bushes and dog leashes.

PRAYFIT WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: Chest Both men and women want strong upper bodies, and there's not a better place to start than with a strong chest, front delts and triceps.

We've been asked to provide a solid chest workout, and this week's workout won't disappoint. This routine covers all areas of your chest, and also involves the front of your shoulders and triceps to a certain degree. You hit the upper chest with incline presses, the middle with flat-bench presses, the lower with decline flyes, and the inner pectorals with the pec deck. You'll finish the routine with bodyweight push-ups all done to failure.

After warm-ups on the first movement, you’ll go right into your heaviest sets to start each exercise, as this is when you’ll be strongest and will be able to handle the most weight. That's important, especially because for the greatest impact, you have to select a weight that causes you to fail at the designated rep range. Post your comments and questions on our forums! Have a great week.
